Focus on life–week 23–typography

This week disappeared quick on me, but I had my eye out for something to share from the world of typography.  Sally Russick from the Studio Sublime offered up this inspiration:

“Is the typography pleasing to the eye, does the font pull you in, draw you away, make you feel inspired? This week focus on the printed word and see what the words are saying to you!”

I thought I might share a picture of a Playmobil box as some recent birthday gifts are still strewn about the place.  I thought of some other pretty pervasive samples too.  Then as I was walking down the stairs I caught sight of a letter I had left atop the pile usually reserved for bills.  This wasn’t a bill, it was a letter addressed to Averleigh from my oldest friend (her son really I suppose).  It is a chain letter of sorts, it came with stickers and instructions – I’ve bought more stickers and it’s sitting on that particular pile so I remember to mail out stickers to other waiting children.  How fun to have actual mail!

I wanted to share her script with you as I don’t think it has changed much over the 26 years we’ve been friends.  The addressed envelope makes a pretty sorry picture though by the time I blur the address.  Not to worry, I still had my own birthday card from her from a couple months ago.

I thought of all the cards, the yearbooks, the random notes that I have from her and other dear friends over the years.  I thought of how distinct her handwriting is to me, how very different it is from my own.  I thought of how my whole family we each have very different writing from one another and leaving a note on the kitchen table you never really had to sign your name.  A million scraps of paper with “Out, be back for dinner” or “Call Paulette” or so many other things always adorned some part of our kitchen growing up.

I realize that hubby and I almost never leave notes for each other.  We text message all those little notes back and forth all day long.  I could use the distinctive screen shot of our iPhones and those colours and shapes would be a whole other powerful typography.

As always I’m eager to see what everyone else has found to share this week right here

  6. Emma I think it's wonderful that you and your friend still write to each other. Most people don't send letters anymore.

  7. Emma, what a great post. Sure gives us cause to reflect on our own heaps of mail. You are right, anything handwritten is a treasure to find nowadays. Your friend's handwriting really is distinctive and beautiful. I love handwritten fonts, and the real thing is even better!

  8. There is nothing better than heading out o the mailbox, expecting bills, and receiving a hand written note instead! On the rare occasion when I receive one, I immediately slow down and relive a memory or two.

  9. I get so much paperwork coming into my home and most of it is related to my husband's business, bills or junk mail. How lovely to receive a beautifully written note from a dear friend. The thought of it makes my heart sing.

  10. It does make me sad that there will be no keeping those small notes etc once my kids get to a certain age I have a ton from when they were little and I love all the little mis-spellings and doodles etc.

  13. About the only thing I write is thank you notes. My handwriting is getting much worse over the years, mostly because I'm always in a hurry. How nice that you still share written letters with your friend.

  14. Interesting post. Handwritten notes are becoming a thing of the past which makes me sad. I make my kids write thank you notes! Had not thought about the notes between hubby and me. You are right, we now text. :(

  15. The written word conveys so much more than friendship. Just knowing someone has taken the time, priceless.

  16. What a lovely story. It made me think of all of my friends and family and how I just love their handwritting and getting anything they've writen and how I've always cherished their different styles - I am so glad I have saved things they've taken the time to write. Thank you for this memory today. Great post!

  17. How lovely to have "real" mail! I do get one every now and again, and it is always treasured. My youngest son has made a tradition of writing a humorous story (he's an excellent writer) in every greeting card...I so look forward to those.
